COURSE DESCRIPTIONS - FRIDAY:

*** Secondary PTSD - UCRA Secretary Deirdre Rand

Deirdre will share practical applications of mental health and stress management and maintaining professionalism in exigent circumstances.

As court reporters, many of us have had to hear stories that will stay with us forever.  This course will allow the participants to share their personal stories of secondary PTSD, including tried and true methods of coping and preserving balanced mental health. This is a mediated course, sharing real-life applications.

*** “The How” - Motivational Speaker Jon Osborn

Often, we are aware of “what” needs to be changed, and even “why,” but are unsure of “how” to do so.  Jon will help us to improve our mental toughness with the use of mental skills.  Jon Osborn is a Cognitive Performance Specialist and a founding member of RJ Performance Group.  Jon teaches unforgettable lessons and techniques to help others be more resilient, in control, and confident, whether on a field or in a boardroom.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS - SATURDAY:

*** Upper Extremity/Postural Problems for Court Reporters - Outpatient Orthopedic Physical Therapist Brian Larsen, MS, DPT

Brian will be educating our members on the common upper extremity/postural problems a court reporter may experience while working rigorously in a sedentary profession.  He will teach us how to perform proper stretches and strengthening exercises to help prevent upper extremity/postural problems, as well as how to alleviate pain and effectively treat common muscle and joint problems associated with court reporting.

*** Who Advocates For You? You Do! - NCRA Immediate Past President Debbie Dibble

In this session, you will learn what new vulnerabilities are being created by technologies and how best practices by stenographic court reporters can protect our court systems and the rights of citizens. Please come and learn how you can and must advocate for our profession.

*** Brief Swap - UCRA Director Mylinda Faircloth

A “brief” is a way to write multi- syllabic or multi-word combinations in one single, time-saving stroke. They are the lifeblood of a court reporter.  The faster you can write, the more easily you can keep up.  Mylinda will lead an interactive session and teach reporters new briefs and brief concepts.

*** How Hearing Works - Dr. Erek Winnett, Au.D.

This course will cover a general overview of how hearing works, provide updates on current technology, and offer suggestions on how to protect your hearing.

*** Grammar & Punctuation - UCRA Director Mylinda Faircloth

A transcript is of no value if it’s full of mistakes and is unreadable. Mylinda Faircloth, a 37-year court reporter, who is certified in both Texas and Utah, will lead this informative and interactive session on grammar, punctuation, and word-usage skills.

*** Legislation, Regulations & Ethics - UCRA President Vickie Larsen

Vickie will update attendees on applicable Utah laws and rules.
